Injection Sclerotherapy Q & A

Sclerotherapy is an injection treatment that eliminates spider veins and varicose veins.

Treatment takes place as you lay on your back with your legs elevated.

Dr. Chan injects a solution — the sclerosing agent — into the affected veins with a very fine needle. The sclerosing agent causes irritation in the vein walls which eventually results in the collapse of the vein.

After it collapses, the vein walls stick together and your body reroutes the blood to other veins. The vein will be naturally absorbed over time.

Sclerotherapy patients must be in good health overall and should be willing to adhere to all the preparation and recovery rules that SoCal Vein & Aesthetics provides. Good sclerotherapy candidates are typically between 30-60 years old, but if you’re younger or older, Dr. Chan is happy to evaluate you to see if this procedure would work for you.

No. In fact, there is no recovery time needed for sclerotherapy treatment. Most patients are able to go back to their regular routine whenever they’re ready.

After sclerotherapy treatment, results will be seen over a couple of weeks. Most patients see the final result at the three to six week mark. Because of this, SoCal Vein & Aesthetics generally recommends that patients wait around six weeks between sclerotherapy sessions.

It varies by patient, but most patients need two to four treatments in total. If your veins are minor, you may need fewer treatments.

After sclerotherapy, Dr. Chan recommends that patients use compression legwear for at least a week. Compression of the treated areas can help the veins seal themselves closed and can prevent blood from being trapped within the veins.

Compression also helps with overall circulation and can make recovery more comfortable.

You’ll need to avoid heavy exercise for a few days after sclerotherapy treatment.

If you’re struggling with either spider veins or varicose veins, you don’t have to live with them any longer. Dr. Chan and the SoCal Vein & Aesthetics team are ready to help. Use the online appointment tool or call the office anytime to start the journey towards banishing your veins!
