Botox® & Dermal Fillers Q & A

How does BOTOX work?

BOTOX is an injectable solution that corrects the appearance of lines and creases that form in the skin as a result of facial expressions like smiling or frowning. BOTOX blocks the nerve transmissions between specific facial muscles and the brain. This signal interruption means the muscle does not contract, so the skin overlying them doesn’t form creases and wrinkles. BOTOX injections last about four months, but patients who have regular injections often find their lines become softer so they can wait longer between injections.

How is BOTOX administered?

Very fine needles distribute the BOTOX at specific points in your desired treatment areas. Many people experience very little pain or discomfort and compare the sensation to a tiny pinch. If you have particularly sensitive skin or simply wish to minimize discomfort, you may request a topical numbing cream or ice beforehand.

Once the treatment is complete, you may have some minor swelling, redness, or tenderness at the injection sites, but these effects are temporary and soon resolve. Avoid rubbing the area to prevent spreading BOTOX to other areas of the face, which can diminish the final effects.

Is BOTOX safe?

BOTOX is relatively safe when administered by a trained professional, and severe side effects are rare. For your ensured safety, if you have a skin infection in the treatment area, wait until it’s healed before your treatment.

Talk to Dr. Chan about any medical conditions, plans to have facial surgery, or plans to become pregnant, and notify him about the medications you take. Patients under the age of 18 and those who are pregnant, breastfeeding, or have a neurological disease are not recommended to receive BOTOX treatment.

How Long Does Botox Last?

Botox begins working shortly after your treatment. The procedure takes only about 10 minutes — and you’ll likely begin noticing improvements in 24-48 hours. Results last up to four months, at which point you can schedule another session.
